Frequently Asked Questions

There is a minimum age of 18 (on the first day of the Games) for the majority of Officials roles. There will be some designated supervised roles for 16 & 17 year olds. Please use the contact us page to speak to us about this possibility directly.

We are delighted and very excited to be returning to Sheffield, which will be hosting the Games for a second time. During the Games, Athletes will be competing in a variety of sports venues across the City and specific details about the sports venues and competition schedules will be revealed towards the end of 2016.
This will depend on the competition schedule for your sport and we hope to have more information on timings towards the end of 2016. However, please note that some sports may be running in the evenings.
Yes, as an Official you will receive at least one polo-shirt.
You will receive your kit along with your accreditation pass when you arrive in Sheffield to volunteer as an Official.

Accommodation will only be provided for key non-local officials if pre-approved by Special Olympics GB National Office. Please use the contact us page to speak to us about this possibility directly.

You will be provided with a packed lunch/dinner (depending on the time of your officiating shift) each day that you are volunteering. These will be distributed at the sports venues. If you are a key non-local Official and accommodation is being provided for you, you will also get breakfast and dinner or an allowance for these meals.
We will pay travel expenses for the majority of Officials up to a set limit.
We are relying on the majority of our officials to make their own arrangements for transportation while volunteering at the Games but further details of transportation routes will be provided nearer to Games time.
Sports Specific Head Officials will be appointed for each sport taking place at the Games. Their role will be to support Competition Managers and to manage the team of Officials in that sport during the Games. Their details will be posted on the 'Officials - Team' page soon!
Competition Managers will be appointed for each sport taking place at the Games. They will have responsibility for preparing, coordinating and running the competition in their sport at the Games. Their details will be posted on the 'Officials - Team' page soon!
Yes. Volunteer training will be held in Sheffield. Further details on exact dates and times will be released nearer the time. All volunteers including Officials will be expected to attend this Games specific training.
All Officials will be invited to attend the Opening Ceremony. More information will be provided nearer the time.
